The Clinical Study and Treatment of Established Non-union in the Tibia Hyung

Abstract
It has been well known that the incidence of non-union of tibial shaft fracture is so high that many orthopaedic surgeons have drawn attention to improve the method of treatment.
This paper presents the follow-up result of 23 cases among 36 established tibial non-union cases which were treated at the Orthopaedic Department of Medical Center from Febrary 1971 to June 1979 by various methods.
The study of this series shows the followings:
1. Among .23 cases, male was predominant (87%), Peak age group was 3rd and 4th decades (69%).
2. The most common location was around the distal 1/3 of tibia.
3. The causes of injury were traffic accident (52%), industrial injuries (35%). and others (130).
4. The dominant character of the fracture for non-union were transverse and short oblique (730), comminuted (690), and open (69%).
5. The probable causes of non-union were infection (14 cases), distraction (5 cases), poor external immobilization (5 cases), malalignment (5auses) and poor surgical technique (5 cases).
6. Radiological findings in regard to callus formation of bony ends were classified into hypertrophic type (11 cases) and atrophic type (12 cases) respectively,
7. Exellent result was obtained in the group treated by compression technique and bone graft (100%) as compared with other various methods (80%).
